The following varieties of Abelia are in cultivation:
Abelia Chinensis (syn. rupestris) China 1816.
Deciduous, 3-4 ft. bush or climber. Flowers, fragrant pink passing to white, tree flowering during summer and autumn. Rather tender, best in cold house, or warm wall. The true plant uncommon in cultivation. A. grandiflora, a hybrid, A. chinensis uniflora often being substituted.
Abelia floribunda. Mexico 1841.
Evergreen; the most beautiful Abelia that can be grown out of doors in this country; needs protection of wall. Thrives at Kew against wall of greenhouse. Will reach a height of 3 ft. The rosy red pendulous flowers are freely produced in June and July.
Abelia grandiflora, hybrid, see Chinensis.
Evergreen, 3-5 ft. The flowers are fragrant, white tinged pink, July to October. Of graceful habit, and brilliant green foliage. Hardy in Surrey.
